WiiPresent is a new type of 3D-presentation tool which uses multiple Nintendo Wii Remote Controllers by Nintendo.
Additionally, a self-built infrared pen and infrared glasses enable the use of previously undiscovered potentials of the wiimote, like head-tracking and whiteboard-use. These inexpensive utilities and the software WiiPresent enable you to interact intuitively with a computer-generated 3D-model. The combination of the Bluetooth and Infrared (IR) technology with the integrated acceleration sensors revolutionizes Human-Computer Interaction in terms of presentations, because of the use of inexpensive and common controllers like the wiimote.
It was developed by Christa Hasenraht in her diploma thesis at the FH JOANNEUM, Information Management in Graz, Austria.
Diploma Thesis: Christa Hasenrath, 2008
Supervisor: Alexander Nischelwitzer
All in all, three functionalities are implemented one for each wiimote:
•
3D-wiimote is the base interaction controller for the audience. The 3D-product can be rotated in any direction according to the wiimote-rotation.
•
Tracking-wiimote is positioned in front of the audience, where the integrated infrared camera can see the infrared-LEDs of the glasses. One person has to wear them. The background and the model itself will follow the head-position (head-tracking), whereby the 3D-effect will be emphasized.
•
Whiteboard-wiimote is used as a receiver for the infrared pen. It is positioned at a 45-degree angle to the projection field and gives the presenter the possibility of showing further information about the product or to rotate the object on the projection field without using the 3D-wiimote.
All wiimotes must be connected to a PC via Bluetooth. The WiiPresent application has to be started on the PC to capture the data and the movement-actions. Through the use of the implemented tracking functions it is possible to present 3D-products in an intuitive and interactive way.
Interaction Design
As described, three interaction methods are used in combination with the hard-/software, the presenter and the audience.
•
Audience 3D-wiimote
One person in the audience can move the 3D-product on the screen through rotating the 3D-wiimote. The wiimote is only connected to the PC via Bluetooth and is able to transfer the motion-data wirelessly. So it is possible to move the 3D-object in real-time.
•
Audience infrared glasses
One person in the audience puts on the infrared glasses. These glasses have two infrared-LEDs, whereby the technique of head-tracking is possible. With this method the 3D-effect will be emphasized, so that it appears as a virtual window through which it is possible to see a room. The 3D-object is placed in this room.
•
Presenter whiteboard / infrared pen
The presenter has an infrared pen in order to control the presentation and the functionality of the interactive whiteboard. The pen has an integrated infrared-LED, whose light the whiteboard-wiimote detects. Based on this, the presenter can show more information on the screen or move the 3D-object through buttons in the application.

The IAMM NTD36HD is a very impressive media centre which can easily accommodate a plethora of media. So, if you’ve been humming and hawing about how to manage all that media on your PC, camera, video camera, PMP, MP3 then hum no more and see how the IAMM will put a smile on your face…
When you first see the IAMM NTD36HD you just can’t wait to get the hard drive in and fire it up!
The casing is a stylish white plastic with control features on the top and front of the unit and an abundance of digital video and audio outputs at the back which we will get to shortly….
The IAMM allows you the choice of hard drive to suit your needs which makes it flexible in terms of price. Furthermore the type of hard drive is IDE which means that you can get a pretty huge drive for reasonable cost!
The loading of the hard drive is very simple and needs no tools or Handy Andy….just slide and open the compartment at the base of the IAMM to reveal the drive bay. Slide out the drive locking key and pop in your drive. Connect the power and IDE cable, slide the drive locking key back in to secure, close the compartment and you’re done!
Looking to the rear of the IAMM will reveal the scope of support for Video and Audio and Communication. There is standard Composite Video, S-Video, Progressive Scan and DVI output. For Audio you have standard Audio 2 Channel, Digital Optical, Digital Coaxial and 5.1 Channel Audio Support so you can plug it into your surround sound system with ease.
As for communications, there is a USB port for loading files and hosting, plus an Ethernet port so the IAMM can sit on your network for file sharing and easy access. Finally, if that wasn’t enough, a wireless access is available to let you stream your movies from wherever you are in your house or office!
In terms of performance, the IAMM core is a Sigma Design Chipset – 8621 which supports up to 1920 x 1080 progressive scan and so you can playback HD programs easily from your set top box or hard disk recorder.
The latest video formats are supported….pre recorded HD file (tp, ts), WMV9, WMV9 HD, MPEG1/2, MPG, MPEG4(DivX, Xvid)….
ISO and IFO formats are also supported which means that you can store your favourite DVDs in the IAMM and hide the DVDs away so that nobody can borrow them and not return them (how annoying is that….or even worse when you only get an empty case back…!!)
So…switching on the IAMM…you get a pleasant surprise as although it contains a fan, it doesn’t sound like a Dyson and is surprisingly quiet. A flash of LEDs up and down the front panel let you know that power up is ok and your default options are lit. This is really handy as you don’t need to keep grabbing the remote and digging into the setup, TV and Audio selections can be made by virtue of the 2 buttons on the front of the IAMM.
It’s a similar story for the buttons on the top as they can be used to select and play media in case you’ve had a row over how there are too many remotes now and they’ve all been confiscated and hidden away…!!
As for the remote, it is a nice sturdy and comprehensive one. Setup and navigation is very easy once connected to the TV and you can easily be watching your favourite movie or listening to your favourite albums in no time.
